As reported by WGRZ, in their article, “New Cars Would Require Speed Warning Systems, Under Proposed State Law,” a new bill in New York State could mandate speed warning technology in all newly manufactured and registered vehicles by January 1, 2029. The proposed legislation, Bill No. A10712, introduced by Assembly Member Robert Carroll, aims to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities by alerting drivers when they exceed the speed limit by 10 mph.
The bill draws inspiration from the European Union, where “Intelligent Speed Assistance Systems” are already required in new cars. Supporters argue that the technology could significantly reduce traffic-related deaths, citing a New York State Comptroller report that found one-third of the 1,175 motor vehicle fatalities in 2022 involved speeding. The bill also references studies suggesting that road deaths could decrease by up to 20%, and speeding incidents could drop by 80%, if this technology were implemented.
