As reported by Rochester First in their article, “New York State: What Lighting Is Permitted on a Passenger Vehicle?”, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers about New York’s strict regulations on vehicle lighting. While many aftermarket lighting products may enhance a vehicle’s appearance, only certain colors and placements are legally allowed when operating on public highways.
According to New York State law, the following lights are required and permitted for passenger vehicles:
- Headlamps – Two white lights of equal power
- Tail Lamps – Two red or amber lights of equal power
- Turn Signals – Amber in the front; red or amber in the rear
- Hazard Lights (Four-Way Flashers) – Amber in the front; red or amber in the rear
- License Plate Lamp – White
- Backup Lamp – White
