As reported by Q1057 in the article “How Is It Possible to Legally Turn Left On A Red Light In New York State?”, most drivers are familiar with the rule allowing a right turn on red—but fewer know that left turns on red are legal in certain situations in New York State.

According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the law permits drivers to make a left turn on a red light only when both the street you’re turning from and the street you’re turning onto are one-way. Before turning, you must come to a complete stop, check that the intersection is clear, and proceed only when it’s safe.
