As reported by Q1057 in their article “Is It Legal or Illegal To Drive With the Dome Light On Inside the Car In New York State?” — many of us grew up believing that flipping on the dome light while driving was against the law. Turns out, that childhood warning might not have been entirely accurate.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends drivers keep their interior lights off at night, noting that internal lighting can impair visibility of the road ahead. While this recommendation is made in the interest of safety, it doesn’t equate to a legal violation.
